Nearly half a million children’s health records across Bury, Oldham, Rochdale and Trafford have been successfully integrated onto a new child health information system to support services in each area.

The four boroughs have joined the Greater Manchester CarePlus system provided by System C that already covers other parts of the region.  The go-live means nine of the ten CCG areas in Greater Manchester are now using the system for a unified source of information whilst caring for and safeguarding child residents.

Paula Markham, head of operational informatics, Northern Care Alliance NHS Group said:

“Bringing Bury, Oldham, Rochdale and Trafford on board the Greater Manchester child health information system and creating a larger footprint with a single system will strengthen the service for children and parents as well as better supporting our colleagues across the regions.

“We are using CarePlus to provide care professionals with an accurate, comprehensive and up to date electronic record for every child in the areas, at the point of care, by integrating information from maternity providers, blood spot screening labs, health visitor teams and newborn hearing programme providers.”

Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust has gone live with its new electronic patient record system from System C, a move designed to transform the delivery of care to 270,000 residents of Walsall and neighbouring areas. There are 2,500 clinical and administrative staff using the system.

The deployment itself was conducted largely remotely and achieved a textbook 100% success rate in the automated data migration exercise. It also took place in full public gaze, with progress relayed live over Twitter during the critical go-live weekend when data was transferred and legacy systems were turned off.

Daren Fradgley, Director of Integration and Deputy Chief Executive at Walsall Healthcare, said:
“Replacing an Electronic Patient Record is a major programme of work impacting all of our clinical processes. We are delighted that the transition has happened so smoothly. The feedback from users has been really positive and that is a tribute to the genuine partnership between Walsall and System C. Thank you as well to our colleagues in Barnsley who walked the floors with us on ‘go-live’ weekend.”

Staff at Kettering General Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (KGH) are going live with a new real-time clinical system for better managing patient journeys through the hospital.

The Trust is the first in the country to go live with System C’s Patient Flow software, a major new part of the company’s CareFlow integrated EPR. With real-time feeds from the Trust’s PAS and clinical systems, the software provides an accurate, live picture of capacity and needs at the ward and Trust level, with a view to helping reduce length of stay, improve clinical outcomes and produce cost savings.

Dione Rogers, chief nursing information officer, said: “Patient Flow’s large touch screen boards display all the information you need on the wards at a glance. For the staff, it gives them a clear, easy to use framework for managing the patient from admission to discharge. It is also making board rounds so much smoother and significantly reduces the need for paper-based records.”

The health records of 355,849 children living in Liverpool and Sefton have been consolidated into a new, single child health information system. The deployment of System C’s CarePlus child health information system progressed to plan and went live successfully, despite the country being in Covid-19 lockdown. The fully digital service will support the protection and health of Merseyside’s children.  Care professionals in the area will be able to track children from childhood through to their transition to adult services and will have access to all the relevant information to provide suitable care.

Liverpool and Sefton Child Health Information Services have joined up with neighbouring Cheshire’s and are sharing the same CarePlus system to provide an integrated service.  Cheshire rolled out the CarePlus system at the beginning of the Covid-19 lockdown. Sue Trinder, Child Health Information Services Director at NHS South, Central and West Commissioning Support Unit (SCW*) said, “This was an important deadline for us and I’m very pleased this new service could progress to plan, despite the very real challenges of Covid-19. We are making great ground across the regions.  Thank you to all the teams involved in making that happen.”

Two NHS Trusts using System C’s CareFlow e-observations have been shortlisted in three categories at this year’s HSJ Patient Safety Awards, designed to recognise outstanding contributions to healthcare.

The DETECT research study has been shortlisted for both the ‘Deteriorating Patients & Rapid Response Systems’ award and the ‘Best Emerging Solution for Patient Safety’ award.

The study is a partnership between Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust, The University of Liverpool, Edge Hill University, Lancaster University and System C.  The first-of-type research programme seeks to identify early warning signs of deterioration in children using e-observations, with the aim of reducing critical care transfers.

Mid Essex Hospital Services NHS Trust has also successfully been shortlisted for its use of e-observations to widen access to end-of-life spiritual care.

System C is embarking on a major recruitment campaign in support of the widespread roll-out of its clinical systems.

The company is looking for up to 30 additional specialists to join its existing technical and product teams.

The recruitment campaign follows news that many of the company’s customers are adopting System C’s blueprint for digital transformation, moving from being ‘PAS-plus’ users of System C’s software to deploying the company’s full electronic patient record.

Ian Denley, joint chief executive of System C, explained: “We are really pleased to be now ramping up delivery.  It is great to see customers so enthusiastic about the products we’ve designed in our clinical systems development programme over the last few years.

Cathy Harris has been appointed to the new role of head of solution assurance at System C. She joins the company from Google, where she was product lead for DeepMind Health and the Streams mobile clinical application.

Cathy is a System C old-timer, having worked with the company from 2008 to 2016, latterly as director of product management.

Cathy’s new role at System C is a response to the company’s transformation from a ‘PAS Plus’ supplier to one which provides an integrated, end-to-end blueprint for full hospital and care community-wide digitisation.

“System C’s EPR has increased considerably in scope and complexity over the last few years. I see my role as providing an interface between the product team on the one hand and our deployment experts on the other, helping them deliver complex end-to-end solutions to our customers.”

Kettering General Hospital NHS Foundation Trust has awarded a 10-year contract to System C to supply an integrated clinical record and administration system.

The Trust’s aim is to improve care provided to patients by delivering mobile clinical and decision-making support to clinicians, improving the flow of patients through the main c.600-bed hospital and outlying clinics and fully digitising the patient record. It will be doing this by adopting System C’s blueprint for full hospital computerisation.

Kettering General Hospital provides acute healthcare services for the people of North Northamptonshire and South Leicestershire, and treats approximately 377,000 people a year.

Andy Callow, chief digital information officer at Kettering, said:

“We have put in place an ambitious digital programme to improve both the patient and staff experience.  Implementation of the EPR is one of the key enablers of our digital journey.”
